Mutations
Welsh, like all the Celtic languages, has a system of mutations that helps make signal grammatical distinctions. This overview outlines all the words that cause mutations and talks about the phonetics of these sound changes. By learning a few simple rules, you’ll be able to correctly mutate every time.
Numbers
Ordinal, cardinal, feminine, masculine, decimal, traditional. Books on Welsh are full of these words. Here you’ll find some helpful grids outlining all the different number forms and when to use them. We’ll explain what all these forms are about and you can download a chart of numbers for free.
Yes & No
There’s no single pair of words for ‘yes’ and ‘no’ yn Gymraeg. Instead, the words for ‘yes’ and ’no depend on the kind of question we’re asked. When we say ‘yes’ and ‘no’ we usually have to use a form of the verb 'to be' and give information about time and person, just like we do with other verbs.
Before you get started with learning a language, it can be a good idea to commit some basic vocab to memory to allow you to get recognising words and instantly speaking with people.
Here you can download an Excel spreadsheet of basic vocab, introductory phrases and an overview of the verb to be in Welsh. You can use this for creating your own flashcards or copy the tables over to an app like Quizlet (see below!)
